Wild Thing

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/government-rejects-ban-on-wild-animals-in-circuses-2283730.html

Summary:
In Britain, around twenty wild animals are still performing in three circuses. It concerns animals like tigers, snakes and zebras. The majority of the British public support a ban on wild animals in circuses but today the Government ruled otherwise. Instead of introducing a ban, which was expected until recently, environment ministers opt for inspecting and licensing the animals. Consultants will assess transportation and treatment to ensure a certain quality of life. Animal Welfare Organizations expressed their concern about this option, claiming it does not improve animal welfare and only creates a great deal of bureaucracy in comparison with the industry.

Opinion:
It has been a while since I last visited a circus show but I don’t think the absence of wild animals will make it a less interesting experience. Animals belong in their natural habitats, a zoo might be acceptable because the majority of the zoos create an environment that is similar to the animal’s natural habitat. Capturing animals in order to teach them tricks and perform for us, however, is something I cannot see the point of. Apparently, the responsible ministers were in favour of a ban but switched sides at the last minute. The circus lobby probably convinced them that the animal rights were not violated at all....

  1. I don't like animals in a Circus. At the same time I realize that training of wild animals can also be animal enrichment. Today many zoos train their animals for reasons of health and enrichment. I wonder if your opinion on animals in Circuses will change if they lived in a natural environment during their time of.

  2. Wild thing, you make my heart sing……
Shame on the Government, they almost did the right thing. Wild animals don't belong in circuses. I never went to a circus with wild animals and explained my children why. My daughter was invited once to go with her best friend and she declined with explanation. She told me 'they were surprised, they never thought about the wellbeing of the animals in circuses?' I prefer real show acts in circuses, that are real circuses to me. And the people performing have a choice and they make the choice themselves. The animals are dependant on the common sense and nature of the human race. I hope in the end the wilds animals will be banned from circuses. Now we seem way of track in Britain. People should simply stop going.

  3. Animals do not belong in a circus. Period. Even if they are cared for with love and attention, they have to live in small cages and are not able to act on instinct. The old animals who have lived their whole life in a circus, should be brought to a animal-old-age-home or something, and enjoy their ‘retirement’. But, training new animals to perform just to pleasure the public is out of the question. I wonder however, how we are going to protect the natural habitat of animals. Many species became extinct or are on the brink of extinction because we humans interfere with their habitat.
