Super Thursday

Summary:
The Britons hold a referendum today in order to vote in favour or against an alternative voting system, referred to as AV. The referendum is held together with local elections in the four British states. The current voting system, known as first-past-the-pole, is unfair and does not represent the actual votes by the public, according to the Yes-camp. Both Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband, leaders of respectively the Liberal Democrats and Labour, are in favour of AV while Prime Minister David Cameron leads the No lobby. According to the last polls two-third of the British public will reject the AV which might mean a change in politics is unlikely in the near future.

Opinion:
The first-past-the-pole system is so unfair, I cannot understand why anyone would like to keep it! The winner takes it all, even when the majority of the public voted against him, is that not strange? Had the Netherlands had this system, it would have meant that the VVD did not have to find coalition partners but just rule on its own for four years, even though the majority of the Dutch voted for other political parties. One positive point is that the formation of a new government is shift so it does not disrupt the political life of the nation.

2 opmerkingen:

  1. I think the biggest issue here is that most British people just doing everything to keep things the same. They do not want to change anything, as we can see with driving on the left and holding on to the Pound. The "same old same" should be left when a better or fairer system can be introduced. Change is not always bad and it would be more useful to try and see first.

  2. Once again the British people have a change to change things for the better in my opinion and they don't do it. Why? Is it because they don't like the change or don't they want the fuss of formation? Even the Yes camp people don't really understand why there are so many no-voters in the country.
